Be a Role Model

One of the best ways you can teach your child to be kind is to be kind yourself. A great majority of the behaviors and traits your child develops are learned from watching and copying you. As a parent, you need to be a good role model in many aspects of life. Being caring and compassionate to others is a great place to start working towards raising kind children.

If you want your child to show empathy to others and be caring in everything they do, you need to model those same behaviors, even on the days when the world seems out to get you, showing kindness is one of the most important times to be caring to those around you. It will show your child that being kind is not conditional, but something that should be practiced no matter what.

By being a good role model, you can help your child develop these traits and grow into a caring person.

Identify Emotions

Being aware of emotions is a big step in being an empathetic person. When your child is around three or four, you should be teaching them about their emotions anyway. If they are feeling scared or sad, identify that emotion for them and ask them how they feel. Ask them how you can help them feel better, or how they can help themselves feel better.

One thing you can do to make identifying emotions simpler for your kiddo is to make physical connections. If they are scared or nervous, help them realize the feeling in their belly, how their heart seems to be fluttering, or other physical attributes that go along with the feeling of fear.

By making physical connections to their feelings, your child will be better able to understand their own emotions and identify those emotions in other people. When your kiddo can recognize those different emotions in other kids, they will be more understanding of how they feel and how to act towards them. When they see a kid who is scared, they will know that being kind can help them feel better.

Let Them Care For Others

Whether you have a family pet or a younger child, giving your kiddo the opportunity to care for others can help them develop this characteristic. When you give a child the responsibility to care for someone else, they will learn firsthand why it matters and what it is like to help out. Let them help push their younger siblings stroller or help you put them to bed. Have them feed your pet every day and help take them on walks. When you give them the opportunity to care for those in your family, they will be more willing to help others, as well as boost their self-confidence and make them feel important.

Make Caring a Priority

You should teach your child, at a young age, that caring from others is a priority. There are many moments in life when your child can put themselves first and not be empathetic to those around them. Teaching your child that being kind should be put above everything else is a great way to help them develop this special trait. It is important for your child to understand that caring for others is just as important as your child’s own happiness.

Help your child understand someone else’s perspective. Switch up the situation on them and ask if they were in the other person’s shoes how they would feel with the way they are acting. This will help them realize that sometimes it is important to show others kindness and put others before yourself.

Volunteer Together

There are many opportunities for volunteering with your family. Whether you volunteer at a homeless shelter, animal shelter, or even with a church group, exposing your child to different situations can help expand their view of the world and realize that helping and caring for others is extremely important. Depending on your child’s level of development, you can choose a place to volunteer based on what you believe they can handle.

When you volunteer with your child, you can help them develop their levels of empathy and allow them to care for those who really need it. As we mentioned before, letting your child care for others allows them to better understand why it is important. This will also help them realize how lucky they are and appreciate everything they have. Which brings us to our next point.

Teach Them Appreciation

When you teach your child to appreciate everything they have and appreciate what others do for them, they are likely to grow into more compassionate adults. Rather than comparing their lives to others and noticing what others have that they don’t, they will be able to appreciate everything they have and care for those who may not be as fortunate. They will learn to show kindness to others and appreciate the kindness that others show them.

This can also help boost your child’s overall happiness. Children who are appreciative are more likely to feel more fulfilled in life, which is another benefit that being caring can provide. Praise kindness and ask your child how they feel when they do something kind for someone else. Don’t help them with the answer. Let them think it over and struggle to figure out how they feel. By doing this, your kiddo will be able to realize that the reward for helping others comes from within. It is important that you teach your child to be kind because they want to, not for other people’s approval or praise.

By following these tips, you can raise a caring and compassionate child. Raising your children to show kindness to everyone they meet is not difficult as long as you put the effort in. Be a good role model and make kindness a priority in your family.
