Great Children’s Books, Part 2

Here at Yellow Brick Road, we are proud to do our part to help children grow (and give parents a break to boot!) with our affordable child care in Minnetonka. Give us a call if you want a safe learning environment to drop your kids off while you are busy. But children are always learning and growing, not just at school or day care. As a parent, it is important to cultivate their proclivity for learning by instilling a love of reading. To help make reading with your child more fun, we have listed some great children’s books for you both to enjoy.

The Polar Express

Written by Chris Van Allsburg, the Polar Express is a fantastic Christmas children’s story. Make it a part of your Christmas tradition, because this is a book you can both enjoy many times over! With exquisitely drawn artwork, you and your child will be captivated to the end! There is lots of Christmas magic to enjoy in this wonderful story! Though it was written all the way back in 1985, it has withstood the test of time.

The Tale of Peter Rabbit

Written by Beatrix Potter all the way back in 1901, this is another book that has withstood the test of time; 100 years of it to be exact! Peter Rabbit is certainly a naughty protagonist, but he will have your child in fits of giggles the whole story through. This is one of the first books to be printed with lifelike anthropomorphic animals in human clothing, a style that is extremely prevalent and recognizable today.

The Hobbit

This Tolkien classic is for kids who have all of the basic fundamentals of reading down pat. It is a great way for your child to use their new linguistic tools in a world building story full of magic and wonder. Follow Bilbo on his iconic journey, adventuring to a famed dwarven city and battling a fearsome dragon. It’s a great choice to get your child into the fantasy genre, which will capture their imagination for years to come.

The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe

Another classic for older children, C. S. Lewis’ famous novel has another kind of magic all of its own. A great Christian allegory, this is a must read for religious households. Let your child journey through the world of Narnia, with magical animals, tricky fawns, and a mighty lion! There are all kinds of moral lessons to be learned on this adventure!

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie

Written by Laura Joffe Numeroff, this is a great book to teach your children about the nature of expectations (and maybe help them sympathize with the plight of the parent). The protagonist of the book finds himself with a mouse and his house. You might wonder, what is the harm in giving the mouse one little cookie? Well, you and your little one will have to see for yourself; give this fun and visually pleasing story a try!

Madeline

Written by Ludwig Bemelmans, Madeline is a must have addition to any little girl’s book collection. The titular character Madeline is a plucky girl at a girls’ school in France. She is a great remodel for all of the younger girls out there, and you will love to follow her adventures as she overcomes obstacles that are thrown in her way. Plus, you can expose your kid to a few French words and aspects of French culture. You’ll love how timeless these stories turn out to be!

The Velveteen Rabbit

Children’s books don’t have to be all frolicking and Popsicles, they can tackle serious subjects as well. That is the case with the Velveteen Rabbit, which we warn you, is going to leave you and your little one in tears. But don’t avoid it because of that, it is a truly beautiful story about friendship and loneliness. If you want to enjoy the transforming power of love, add this to your list!

Hopefully you and your little ones enjoy these reads! If you are looking for affordable child care in Minnetonka, then give Yellow Brick Road a call at your earliest convenience. We’ll be happy to go over any questions that you have about our services.
