Celebrating National Mentoring Month at Yellow Brick Road

mentoring month at YBR

January marks an important observance in the educational and professional landscape: National Mentoring Month. Established to shine a spotlight on the essential role that mentorship plays in fostering growth, this month celebrates the guiding hands and supportive words of mentors across all walks of life. At Yellow Brick Road, we recognize the transformative power of mentorship both within our organization and in the wider community.

Our Mentorship Program

At Yellow Brick Road, we believe that every new journey benefits from a seasoned guide. That’s why we implemented a unique mentorship program that pairs each new staff member with a mentor—or as we like to call them, a “built-in best friend”—for their first 90 days. This program is not just about onboarding; it’s about building lasting relationships and providing a supportive environment from day one. Our mentors are selected for their empathy, knowledge, and enthusiasm, ensuring that every newcomer feels valued and integrated into our family.

Celebrations and Future Plans

This National Mentoring Month, we are planning a series of events to celebrate our mentors and mentees alike. Highlights include a recognition ceremony to honor outstanding mentor-mentee pairs and workshops to refine our mentoring techniques. Looking ahead, we aim to expand our mentorship program to include more peer-to-peer learning opportunities, enhancing our community’s collective knowledge and skills.

Mentorship is more than just a transfer of knowledge—it’s a way to uplift each other and strengthen our community. This National Mentoring Month, we invite everyone at Yellow Brick Road to reflect on the mentors who have impacted their lives and to consider

stepping into a mentoring role themselves. Together, let’s continue to foster a culture of support and growth.

At Yellow Brick Road, every month is an opportunity to mentor and be mentored, as we grow together in wisdom and compassion. Join us in celebrating the profound impact of mentorship on our lives and the lives of those around us.

In addition, we would be remiss without celebrating our passion for community engagement and celebrate National Mentoring Month with our sweet friends at Teammates!  Below is a message from a local director for the organization near our Bennington location in Nebraska.  If you are interested in mentoring young ones in your local area, feel free to reach out directly to Teammates.

The Mission of TeamMates Mentoring Program is to positively impact the world by inspiring students to reach their full potential through mentoring. TeamMates of Bennington is a school-based mentoring program serving 77 students in Bennington Public Schools, grades 3-12. TeamMates fosters a safe, caring and FUN relationship between a student and an adult, outside of their family unit. By meeting in the school building, during the school day, we can honor our core values of commitment to students, safety, integrity, trust and inclusion. We ask that a mentor shows up just as they are and allows a student to do the same. TeamMates Mentoring is not academic or behavior based in anyway. It is Mentee-led time for a student to get a break from the day, spend one on one time with a caring adult and have an extra layer of support during the school day. Even though we are not in the business of ‘fixing’ kids, our data shows a direct correlation to the work we do with academic success, student wellbeing and overall hope for the future. The impact of TeamMates stretches beyond the school building. Mentors report that they leave in a better mood than when they arrived and they return to work or home more engaged, as a result of their mentoring time. TeamMates serves many schools throughout the Metro and nearly every Chapter has a waitlist of students excited to have their very own Mentor. Will that be you?
